Orthodontics For Adults and Children

For many, the decision to address their orthodontia can be one of the most impactful, personal decisions of their lives. At Marian C. Pilecki DDS, we approach orthodontics in a comprehensive manner called Integrative Orthodontics, or Airway Orthodontics.

For most conventional orthodontics, the approach is to correct/straighten the malocclusion (crowding and/or misalignment) of teeth. While this produces attractive results, it often doesn’t address the underlying causes of the crowding or misalignment. Addressing the root causes of malocclusion allows for a more stable result and less need for long-term retainer wear.

WHAT LEADS TO MALOCCLUSION IS IMPORTANT TO SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT

For many, the decision to address their orthodontia can be one of the most impactful, personal decisions of their lives. At Marian C. Pilecki DDS, we approach orthodontics in a comprehensive manner called Integrative Orthodontics, or Airway Orthodontics.

Rather than looking simply at the symptom (teeth misalignment), we at Marian C. Pilecki DDS take a “whole body” approach to orthodontia. We evaluate, analyze, and diagnose our patient’s unique framework to develop the best treatment that addresses not only the malocclusion but the underlying causes as well.

Muscles influence growth and development. The muscles of the oral cavity are constantly active with talking, eating, swallowing, laughing, and breathing. Proper muscular function and positioning is necessary for optimum development of the oral cavity. Bone responds to the forces that surround it; the forces of the muscles, and as such, a narrow, vaulted, undersized upper and/or lower jaw is the result of  improper force and muscular movements during growth and development.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE AIRWAY

There is significant evidence that the airway plays an important role in orthodontic treatment. One of our body’s most important and highly prioritized functions is breathing, andit is heavily impacted by diet, lifestyle, and the environment in which we live. Our bodies adapt to poor airways to keep us breathing properly. The head and neck shift to open inadequate airways, which in turn affects body posture, resulting in behaviors like mouth-breathing. Mouth-breathing doesn’t allow the tongue to be in the proper position during function and rest. Without proper function and positioning of the tongue and other oral muscles, resulting growth and development are not ideal. Addressing these airway issues in conjunction with orthodontics improves the orthodontic result, as well as overall health.

STABILITY IS IMPORTANT

Through gentle orthodontic forces and techniques, we restore proper function, balance muscular forces, improveairway for increased stability, and create beautiful smiles. Most importantly, our global approach to correction can have a positive effect on the entire body – not just the head, neck and jaw. Our treatment addresses asymmetries in the facial bones, misalignment of the teeth, musculature, airway, and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
